Wayne Rooney made history by breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time England goalscoring record

Britain commander Rooney equalled Charlton's count of 49 with a punishment in the triumph against San Marino on Saturday that guaranteed a spot in France next summer. What's more, he was on the spot again late on in Tuesday's match against the Swiss for objective number 50 to eradicate a record that has remained for a long time. It looked like Rooney may be made to hold up until England's meeting with Estonia at Wembley one month from now as Switzerland disappointed Roy Hodgson's side until their resistance was inevitably broken.

Britain substitute Harry Kane pierced the gridlock with a fresh complete following 67 minutes and Rooney revised the record books with a deafening punishment six minutes from time, acquiring an overwhelming applause from the Wembley exhibition. It guaranteed his side finished eight wins out of eight, securing top spot in Group E. Rooney's snippet of heavenliness A thunder of suspicion cleared around Wembley when Italian ref Gianluca Rocchi indicated the spot after Raheem Sterling had been fouled.

Rooney got the ball with the heaviness of desire and history on his shoulders, yet reacted with a decided right-footed punishment that gave Swiss attendant Yann Sommer no chance, despite the fact that he got a hand to it. As he praised the horde of 75,751 inside Wembley - joined by supervisor Hodgson and his private alcove group - rose to recognition the 29-year-old as he was inundated by colleagues. Indeed, even the voyaging Swiss fans liberally perceived the criticalness existing apart from everything else. History had been made.
